WHEN the original Golf GTD was introduced back in 1982, it proved to be a big hit with car fans.

It was an intoxicating blend of practicality, high performance and abstemiousness, a revolutionary compact hatchback with sporty tuning with low diesel running costs.

While many car brands have caught up and now have rival models to compete with the Golf GTD, Volkswagen have fought back and are readying the latest model of the same name for its debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month.

Based on the seventh generation Golf, the new two-litre turbodiesel will be the 'most powerful ever', if its 181bhp is anything to go by.

With an advertised fuel consumption of 61.5mpg, an optional six-speed gearbox and CO2 emissions of 109g/km, drivers will spend £120 on road tax annually after the first year of driving.

From zero to 62 in 7.5 seconds, its 142mph top speed should only be hit on a track.

For those speedsters among us, the LED lights on the number plate will show a clear image for the speed camera  if its not one of the thousands of dummy ones of course. It also comes with LED rear lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, side skirts, a rear diffuser, specially-created sports suspension and a large roof spoiler  the latter being completely unnecessary.

But it is the interior that is exciting Scottish car fanatics. As well as the tartan sports seats, a black rooflining and a sports-style steering wheel, the stainless steel pedals are accompanied by a gear level specific to the Golf GTD.

VW Golf
With ambient lighting, it features the 'Climatronic' climate control  using a computer system instead of manual controls to adjust air distribution, temperature and flow to provide the desired interior climate conditions.

VW Golf
With front and rear parking sensors, it will appeal to even the clumsiest of drivers and 'beep' when approaching an object.

VW Golf
It will also incorporate heated seats and headlight washers to cope with the harsh UK winters. While it will be available in Germany from March for around £25,417, it is expected to be priced similarly from April in the UK, with drivers getting their hands on one in the summer.
