A LEADING surgeon has claimed the rise in whiplash claims is being 'driven by solicitors via insurance companies'. The statement came after it was recently revealed whiplash claims had risen.

"There is a link between insurance companies and solicitor firms and they get some kind of financial reward for passing on peoples' names who have had injuries," said Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon Alwyn Jones.

Mr Jones, who is a full time spinal consultant at Spire Cardiff Hospital, added: "Claims are going up and therefore insurance companies are trying to keep their profits up. I recently heard of a person having had a whiplash injury which was not her fault and because she had not been in an accident, her premium had gone up which seems ridiculous."

He revealed that whiplash injuries can be medically proven with an ultrasound scan - despite normally being a soft tissue injury and usually undetectable - if it is shortly after the accident. He also agreed that early treatments with a qualified physiotherapist can help in getting the range of movement back in the neck after a person has received a whiplash associated disorder
