Max is the busy Managing Director of RM Auctions Europe and is undoubtedly the most full-of-life auctioneer in Europe, with a colourful, friendly and vibrant enthusiasm required to head the world's leading auction house for car collectors. Fluent in English, French, Spanish and his native Italian, he is a skilled auctioneer with the 'cool' factor. Danny Hewitt speaks to Max shortly before RM Auctions' latest sale on Wednesday, October 31.

What is your outlook for the auction?

I'm feeling very, very positive. The room is packed. There's no more parking outside. People don't know where to stop so I'm really feeling very positive about it.

How do you keep RM Auctions' sales fresh and popular in comparison to the likes of Christies and Bonhams, who hold many more auctions every year?

If you just walk into the room, we've got a cocktail reception, we've got music, we've got lights, and we've got a proper cool and funky atmosphere that we like to create. It's like coming into a cool lounge bar and it's not the stuffy Christies style of walking in and sitting down. We take a different approach to it.

And do you personally choose the music?

No, no, somebody that has much better tastes in music than I do.

Tell me about your personal tastes in music.

I'm terrible with music. I only listen to whatever is on the radio. Terrible, isn't it? Whatever's in the 'Top 40' list.

And what car do you feel will sell best today?

The Ferrari '50 'Tour de France' is probably going to do very well. I'd expect that to sell in excess of £1m. The Paul McCartney DB5 will probably make about £300,000 to £350,000.

Could that fetch £1m if there's a big Beatles fan?

It has to be a big Beatles fan. Probably not a million but it could do very well. I'm feeling pretty positive.
