'It's not a car for dandies': Renault to produce exciting new Alpine in 2015
RENAULT and Caterham are to rival Porsche by launching a stylish and fresh 250bhp model within three years. The Alpine sports car, which will cost less than £50,000, will be an elegant and more simplified concept of the A110-50 unveiled by Renault earlier last year.
The new car will be similar but a more simplified version of the Alpine A110-50 concept - a car that received praise by both critics and members of the public for its aesthetics. It will be the first car produced under the Caterham-Renault deal, after the Surrey-based company bought 50 per cent of Automobiles Alpine Renault last Autumn to create a new company - now known as the Societe des Automobiles Alpine Caterham.
"It won't be more hardcore than a Mazda MX-5," said Renault's Stephen Norman. "What we do will not be soft, but not hardcore like a Peugeot 106 Rallye. You can't betray the DNA of Alpine. That's a third of what the car will be."
"It must be light and look different, and have a touch of French dash. It's not a car for dandies, though. We know who the buyer is: he's either French or a Francophile. And the car has technical innovation as part of its DNA," he added, elaborating on the Alpine DNA.
It will be made in Dieppe from 2015 - the home of Alpine since it was founded by Jean Renault in 1955 - alongside a new and more refined Caterham.
Renault aim to target drivers who love the top-of the range versions of the Audi TT and Porsche Boxter - adding more sportiness and zest to the market.
