BMW set for return to Formula 1 after Bernie Ecclestone says it would ‘make sense’ to see them racing

BMW are set to make a comeback to Formula One. At least, that is the view of the sport’s racing boss Bernie Ecclestone.
With the rule changes and smaller engines next season, it will be more economical to run a Formula One team and Mr Ecclestone has said he would not be surprised if the German brand decides to make a comeback – either as a constructor or more likely, as an engine supplier.
It comes after Honda last week announced it will be supplying the engines to Lewis Hamilton’s former team McLaren from 2015, with the team being rebranded as McLaren-Honda.
BMW pulled out of the sport in 2009 after mixed success, but sold the team back to Peter Sauber.
Speaking to City A.M., Mr Ecclestone said: "I would be surprised if we don''t see BMW again. I think they could come in. The amount of money they spent was not significant in the grand scheme of things. It makes sense for them to return.
And while he opposed the introduction of the smaller 1.6-litre engines, he added: "The engines are fixed now, like it or not. We have got what we have got so we have to keep our fingers crossed."
