Vauxhall engineers create their first 'innovative engine' to adhere to Euro rules
VAUXHALL have revealed details of a new diesel engine which will save fuel, reduce emissions and increase vehicle mileage.Soon to be available across several lines with a range of power outputs, the new four-cylinder 1.6 litre CTDI ECOTEC turbo diesel engine is part of the family of downsized products to be introduced - and will replace existing 1.7 litre and certain lower speed versions of the 2.0 litre range.
The new engine, which could saves drivers up to 10 per cent in fuel, has been revealed on the same day as the prices for the roof-raising open-top Cascada. Picture: Vauxhall."The comprehensive renewal of our powertrain portfolio continues at full throttle," said Dr. Thomas Sedran, Deputy Chairman of the Opel/Vauxhall Management Board. "Our new 1.6-litre diesel will set benchmarks for refinement, performance and environmental compatibility. By the end of next year we will have launched three all-new generations of petrol and diesel engines, as part of our roll-out of 23 new models and 13 new powertrains by 2016."

It features a closed-loop combustion control and aluminium block and is the first diesel engine from the British brand to comply with future Euro 6 emissions requirements.
Mr Sedran explained the main aims of the car were to achieve a quiet engine with high power and low fuel consumption.

The maximum power and torque have been increased versus the 1.7-litre engine to 136PS and 320Nm respectively, while fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 10 per cent compared with similarly powerful 2.0-litre diesels.
It was designed by a team of enthusiastic engineers working collaboratively from Turin, Ruesselsheim and the USA. Manufacturing of the engine will begin in spring in Hungary's Szentgotthard - where the company currently makes a similar 1.6 litre petrol equivalent.
The news comes on the same day that Vauxhall revealed new prices for its four-seat convertible, the Cascada, ranging from £23,000 to £28,000.
