Revitalised MOT certificate to 'wipe out' clocking
DODGY garage dealers who profit from clocking cars may now find it more challenging to hide their malicious act.Later this month, MOT certificates will be required to show the mileage of a vehicle for its current test, along with the mileage recorded on the last three certificates.
The aim is to provide a more accurate and detailed history to the potential buyer of a used car.
"Consumers will benefit from the changes as it means they will have a completely accurate account of the current condition of the used car they are purchasing," said Sue Robinson, Director of the Retail Motors Industry National Franchised Dealers Association. "This is great news for car dealers who will gain a much more accurate picture of the vehicle's history. We have campaigned for a long time for rigorous regulation of clocking and this change in legislation is a positive step to wipe out rogue activity."
For years, crooks have bought cars for cheap prices at auctions, altered the mileage through clocking and often sold them on for huge profits. It is a practice that costs the British motor industry £100m a year.
Despite the positive news, drivers have flocked to online forums to exclaim how they believe there are still flaws in the system and ways around it. One described how a clocker only needs to correct the speedometer before each MOT and therefore it could theoretically have a perfect record.
The new legislation will come into effect on November 18.
